AfDB 2026 Report: Africa Hosts 12 of World’s 20 Fastest-Growing Economies
The African Development Bank (AfDB) recently released its 2026 Macroeconomic Performance and Outlook report, highlighting a positive shift in the continent's economic trajectory. Africa’s GDP growth is projected to climb to 4.2% in 2025, up from 3.5% in 2024, with further increases to 4.5% by 2027.
AfDB President Sidi Ould Tah noted that this recovery is widespread, proudly stating that Africa now hosts 12 of the world’s 20 fastest-growing economies. This upward trend is primarily fueled by:
• Increased private consumption.
• Stabilizing monetary conditions.
• Stronger external demand.
Despite the optimism, officials warned of potential headwinds from the ongoing Middle East crisis. Chief Economist Kevin Chika Urama cautioned that a prolonged conflict—specifically one exceeding three months—could shave 0.2 percentage points off growth forecasts. Risks include disruptions to the Strait of Hormuz, which could impact the supply of oil, gas, and fertilizers, while dampening foreign investment.
To maintain this momentum and build resilience, the AfDB advocates for:
• Debt Management: Improving public debt sustainability.
• Regional Integration: Leveraging the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
• Policy Reform: Enhancing public investment efficiency and strengthening social safety nets.
While global tensions persist, the AfDB remains confident in Africa's proven resilience, citing its recovery from previous shocks like the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine. The full "African Economic Outlook 2026" will be presented this May in the Republic of Congo.
