The word Bluetooth isn’t random, it traces back to a 10th-century Scandinavian ruler, Harald Bluetooth. He was known for bringing together different regions of Denmark and Norway under one rule.
In the 1990s, engineers working at Ericsson were developing a new wireless technology to allow devices to communicate over short distances. They chose the name “Bluetooth” as a symbol of connection and unity, reflecting how the king united people, while the technology would unite devices like phones, laptops, and headphones.
The logo itself carries this historical meaning. It blends two ancient runic symbols that represent the king’s initials, creating the familiar Bluetooth icon used worldwide today.
So every time you pair your devices, you’re using a technology whose name is inspired by a centuries old story of unification only now, it’s digital.
