Kwibuka 32: António Guterres and African Union Call for Global Action Against Genocide
Rwanda marks Kwibuka 32 as António Guterres and the African Union renew global calls to prevent genocide, promote unity, and uphold the promise of “Never Again.”
As Rwanda marks the 32nd commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, known as Kwibuka 32, messages of remembrance and responsibility have echoed across the world. Among the most notable were statements shared on X (formerly Twitter) by António Guterres and the African Union, both emphasizing unity, vigilance, and the global duty to prevent genocide.
In his message, António Guterres reflected on the painful lessons of 1994, reminding the international community of its failure to act. He stressed that remembrance must go beyond honoring victims it must inspire concrete action to confront hate speech, division, and incitement to violence. Echoing his widely shared words on X, he urged the world to “learn from past failures & protect the living,” reinforcing the urgency of early warning systems and collective responsibility.
The Secretary General’s official message for the 2026 commemoration further highlighted that Rwanda’s tragedy remains “one of the darkest chapters in human history,” while calling on nations to uphold human rights and strengthen global solidarity against genocide denial and distortion.

Similarly, the African Union used its X platform to reaffirm its commitment to remembrance and prevention. The AU emphasized the importance of African-led solutions in addressing conflict and promoting peace across the continent. It called on member states and citizens alike to reject ethnic hatred and work toward unity, resilience, and justice values deeply rooted in the spirit of Kwibuka.
Both messages converge on a powerful theme: remembrance is not passive. It is an active commitment to safeguarding humanity. As Rwanda leads the world in commemorating Kwibuka 32, global leaders are once again reminded that preventing future atrocities depends on sustained vigilance, education, and the courage to act.
