The National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda (NISR) has released its Rwanda Vital Statistics Report 2025, revealing a significant milestone in the country’s civil registrations. According to the latest data, a total of 4,479 divorces were officially registered throughout the year.

The report highlights a distinction between when a divorce is legally granted by the courts and when it is formally registered with civil authorities. The 2025 total is an accumulation of cases finalized over the last three years:

• 782 divorces granted in 2023

• 1,068 divorces granted in 2024

• 2,629 divorces granted in 2025

Understanding the Data

The sharp increase in registrations for the year 2025 reflects a combination of current court rulings and the formalization of previous years' legal decisions. Of the total registered cases, 58.7% were both granted and registered within the 2025 calendar year.

These statistics are part of Rwanda's ongoing efforts to maintain accurate civil records, providing essential data for social planning and policy development regarding family welfare and legal services.
