In Burundi, the Minister of Communication and Media, Gabby Bugaga, was found dead on the roadside this morning, a sudden death that shocked many people.

It was around 8:00 a.m. this Thursday, April 16, when residents of the Kivoga area in the city of Bujumbura noticed a car parked in a palm plantation near the road. With too much curiosity, they wanted to be aware of what happened. They went to check and find a man sitting inside the vehicle, dead.

People who knew the man quickly identified him as Minister Bugaga and alerted security authorities so that an investigation could begin to determine the cause of his death.

Jérôme Niyonzima, the spokesperson of the Burundian government, confirmed the news of Minister Bugaga’s death, but told the media that more details would be released later.

Security forces, including the army and police, arrived at the scene where Minister Bugaga died. Immediately, his body was then taken to the hospital.

Information from the initial investigation indicates that before Minister Bugaga died, he was not accompanied by his security personnel, which suggests that his life may have been in danger.

Early in August of 2025, Bugaga was appointed Minister of Communication and Media. Before that, he had been a journalist at the state broadcaster RTNB, where he became widely known. He also held other positions in institutions including the Senate and the National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI).
