It’s a Political Ploy: Nduhungirehe Dismisses DRC’s ICJ Case Against Rwanda
Rwanda’s Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe dismisses the DRC’s ICJ lawsuit as a political ploy to mask its own collaboration with the FDLR genocidal group.
Rwanda's Foreign Minister, Ambassador Olivier Nduhungirehe, has strongly condemned the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) lawsuit filed against Rwanda at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The DRC accuses Rwanda of human rights violations and plundering resources over the past 30 years.
This lawsuit, filed on June 26, 2026, claims that Rwanda deployed troops to DRC territory over the past 30 years, violating numerous international treaties, including the 1948 Genocide Convention, as well as conventions against torture, racial discrimination, and for the protection of women.
Speaking to France 24, Minister Nduhungirehe dismissed the June 2026 lawsuit as a mere "political ploy" by President Tshisekedi’s government to distract from its own alliances with criminal groups.
"It is a political tactic. The DRC government is actively collaborating with the genocidal militia, FDLR," Nduhungirehe stated.
He further highlighted that Congolese forces, alongside armed groups like the Wazalendo and foreign mercenaries, are actively targeting Congolese Tutsi and Banyamulenge populations in South Kivu. Nduhungirehe pointed out the hypocrisy of the suit, referencing xenophobic rhetoric previously spread by high-ranking Congolese military officials.
Ultimately, Minister Nduhungirehe emphasized that a state actively committing ethnic violence against its own citizens lacks the moral standing to accuse Rwanda, noting that competent legal authorities will thoroughly expose the reality of the case.
